1. How many years have you been shooting photos?
I have been shooting photos consistently since I was a freshman in high school. So 16 years now.
2. How many years have you been shooting Snowboarding?
I have been shooting snowboarding for 5 years now. I would take snowboarding photos occasionally before that, but I was mostly focused on landscapes and nature.
3. What first got you into shooting?
I first developed an interest in visual arts when I was 10 or 11 years old. My grandfather would let me use his video camera when I would visit my grandparents. After that, I asked for a Handycam for Christmas and started shooting skate videos. My freshman year in high school I took a digital photography class at Burlington high school and that's where I really started to get into photography.
4. Did you have any specific influences in the photo world growing up/now?
One of my first influences in photography was Jerry Uelsmann, who I learned about from my digital photo class in high school. His work is very surreal, he creates realistic-looking images by making collages with negatives pre-photoshop. If you haven't seen his work you should check it out. I was also influenced by Man Ray another surrealist photographer. Ansel Adams was a big influence on my landscape work. As I started to get into snowboard photography I looked up Shem Roose and Blotto both having connections to Vermont. Lately, I have been inspired by Perly, Matt Georges, Oli Gagnon, and Cole Barash.
5. How long have you been snowboarding? Where did it start for you?
I have been snowboarding for 24 years. I learned how to ride at Stowe over on the spruce side when there was still the old lodge back in 1997/98.
6. What is your current home mountain?
My current home mountain has always been Stowe, but I also ride Bolton Valley and Smuggs. I like the vibe better of the locally owned mountains, the Epic pass has definitely made Stowe a shitshow on the weekends and has changed a lot of things for the worse. It's still the best terrain in the area, so that keeps me there the most.

7. Do you have goals for your photography?
My goals for my photography are to constantly strive to take better images. I am rarely happy with my own work, I always find something that I could have done better. There are so many variables that go into creating a good image. That's what keeps me inspired to keep shooting. Aside from that, I would love to travel more and take snowboard photos outside of the east coast.
8. What is your favorite type of snowboard photography? What kinds of things do you enjoy shooting most/ want to communicate with your photos?
I definitely like shooting and riding powder the most. I like hiking and exploring in the mountains. I think freestyle snowboarding is the best form of the act. I enjoy the whole process and lifestyle that comes with snowboarding. I want to share the moments in between the riding as much as the riding itself. Vermont doesn't always have good snow years, so I also enjoy shooting other types of snowboarding like street/backyard stuff when the base is low. You won't find me in the streets on a pow day that is for sure though. Lately, I have been shooting film and experimenting with light leaks which are bringing me back to my first inspiration of surrealism. There are a lot of surreal moments that happen when you are out in the mountains with your friends or even alone. I am trying to capture those feelings and communicate that through my photography. It's the feeling of snowboarding and the natural environment that inspires me the most.
9.Do you have a favorite group of people to go out and shoot with?
I am lucky to have an amazing group of friends to ride with who share the same passion for snowboarding. A lot of the time I just show up and ride with whoever is in the parking lot - Ryan Perryman, Tomas Ruprecht, Status, Craig Brown, Ralph Kucharek, John Murphy, Ian Post, Shem Roose, Brett Matckie, Joe B, Shayne Pospisil, Jake Blauvelt, Steve Dave, Toby Parke, Dave Cory, Luke Haddock, Sam Watson, Alan Parenteau, and many others.
10. What's your day job? What funds the passion?
My day job is photography. I have been licensing lifestyle and landscape images to the State of Vermont for over 5 years now. I also license my images to a bunch of businesses as well as do commercial/product photoshoots and sell prints and books on my website. I have been doing editorial work for many years as well. My passion funds my passion.
11. What is your camera set up? Body/ lenses/ go to boarding photo setup.
I shoot with a Nikon D850 with a battery grip. I have a 14-24mm f2.8, 50mm f1.4, 105mm f2.8, and 70-200mm f2.8 all Nikon lenses. For daily riding, I always carry a film or digital point and shoot. I only bring the backpack with the D850 if I have a mission/spot planned or I am meeting up with someone to shoot. I enjoy snowboarding as much as if not more than photography. I keep it light and easy so I can hit the side hits and take photos.
